Welcome to RWK Woodcarving!

Ever since childhood I’ve had a fascination with carving wood with a knife. Finally, when I was in high school I came across a book on whittling and a shop teacher that was interested in helping me get started. Basically though, I am a self taught wood carver, and have been woodcarving now for more than 40 years. Over the years I have won numerous blue ribbons for my work at various woodcarving competitions around the country. Today my carvings are found in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Afghanistan and Australia. I enjoy carving all kinds of subjects…usually whatever strikes me at the time…but my favorites are caricatures, wizards and Santas. Most of my pieces are carved from basswood, butternut or poplar which are non-toxic, renewable resources here in the United States. Everything I carve is hand carved with just a carving knife and sometimes with a small hand gouge…no power tools are ever used. My phone number is 201-218-8358. Feel free to contact me anytime. The Wood Shed Carving Shop

I began carving in 1988 at the request of my wife. We were at an art show and she was looking at a hand carved Santa and decided that I was going to carve one for her. It didn't seem to matter to her that I had never carved anything before. She was very insistant in the weeks to come, and finally, I gave it a try. I carved one (we still have him), and then another, and another...and I'm still trying to get one right! Maybe some day I will get the hang of it. John Starkey

I hand carve each hair stick and spoon here in my shop, which right now is my kitchen and porch.
Most of the wood I use is prunings from trees on my property or from family and friends yards. I also reuse the wood of old furniture.
I like to take old and discarded stuff that others might dump and make something cool out of it!
Roots and driftwood are some of my favorite wood to carve faces in.
My prices reflect the amount of time, (labor of love), I put into them, which is lots and lots of hours into each piece!
I also carve woodspirits and other sculptures, which I hope to list here soon.
I also paint wall art quilts, soon to come also!
