Native American images have become some of my most favored. I am especially fond of Plains Indian images and images from the tribes of the SouthWest. I was inspired by the portrayal of Jesus and the Trinity as Native Americans when I viewed the artwork of Father John Guliani whose works you can view by clicking on his name. I made two woodburnings after his inspiration and after receiving his approval. I hope to branch out as I find my own voice in this medium.
Native American Jesus With Children
This is wood burn-ing on a rare slice of bass-wood that I re ceived as a gift! There was a hole in it which I trans-formed into a flower. I added Native American signs for "See, Hear, Speak, Do" around the border. Another wood irregularity was transformed into an image of the sun. I added driftwood on the left from which white leather laces extend, adorned with beads and turkey feathers. This piece can be found in the Purchase Gallery. In the Native American tradition, I did not pay for the feathers. They were given as a gift which makes them suitable for use. This is a Fr. Guliani inspired piece. 10 x 10 x 1
Native American Holy Trinity
This is the second work that took its inspir-ation from Fr. Guliani's work. It, too, is on a rather irregular basswood slice, which I believe adds to its beauty. Atop the slice and affixed to a knot is beige leather lace with small turkey feathers which were given as a gift, in keeping with Native American tradition. There was a dark spot on the slice which inspired the brown mask on the Christ image.

Native American Risen Christ
The Risen Christ image is carved from bass-wood. The cross is from pine with a tipi and white buffalo behind Christ's image. The cross is affixed to driftwood. From the driftwood hang feathers that are affixed with thread and secured with beads. The body of Christ is painted with a gold leaf glaze and to express His divinity, a dusting of sparkle was applied to His bonnet.
The arrow-head is carved from butter-nut, but I am not sure of the wood for the spear itself. It is wrapped with black thread. Turkey feathers are affixed with burnt sienna thread and tiny black beads hold them securely.
Navajo Risen Christ Cross
This Navajo Risen Christ cross is wood burned, relief carved and colored with oil. I made a braid using 3 colors of yarn that extend around the periphery of the cross and that culminate in stylized hands on both sides of the cross and on the top and bottom center of the cross as spirit.Turquoise and silver plated beads encircle the face.
With Wreath and Wrought Iron
The pine cross rests on a wreath of wrap-ped vine. The center back-ground is sand paper with twig crosses and leather nimbus. There are sprays of tuquoise colored beads on clear plastic thread at the top.
Stylized Body and Arms
Lastly, I added the stylized body and arms which are thin turquoise threads. The face of Christ is carved into a convex disk with wood burned features.

"Hindsight"
While not spe-cif-ically Native American, it would go nicely in a room with Native American themes. For more information about this round, please click on the image. Wood burned on basswood round
